SUMMARY:Evan Mirapaul | In Concert: Photography and the Violin
DESCRIPTION:The Evan Mirapaul Collection of Violin Portraits

Join us at the Griffin on Friday November 6th for a special
presentation from Evan Mirapaul discussing his unique collection
featured as part of Common Time : American Musicality.

For nearly as long as photography has existed\, people have
photographed violins. Sometimes the instrument appears as evidence of
musical accomplishment or a treasured possession\; at other times it
serves as a marker of class\, identity\, aspiration\, or cultural
belonging. Few objects in the history of art possess such a flexible
and enduring symbolism. The violin moves effortlessly between high and
popular culture\, between wealth and poverty\, and across geographies
  as varied as Russia\, Mexico\, Appalachia\, Japan\, Central Europe\,
and New York. It is this remarkable ability to adapt to different
artistic\, social\, and cultural contexts that makes the violin such a
  compelling photographic subject.
