Eugene Richards
Eugene Richards was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1944. After graduating from Northeastern University with a degree in English, he studied photography with Minor White. In 1968, he joined VISTA--Volunteers in Service to America--a government program established as an arm of the so-called 'War on Poverty.' Following a year and a half in eastern Arkansas, Richards helped found a social service organization and a community newspaper, Many Voices, which reported on black political action as well as the Ku Klux Klan.Upon returning to Dorchester, Richards began to document the changing, racially diverse neighborhood where he was born. After being invited to join Magnum Photos in 1978, he worked increasingly as a freelance magazine photographer.Among numerous photography honors, Richards has won a Guggenheim Fellowship, three National Endowment for the Arts grants, the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Award, the Leica Medal of Excellence, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award, two Olivier Rebbot Awards from the Overseas Press Club, a National Geographic Photography grant, and the Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award. Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue and Dorchester Days were chosen for inclusion in the exhibition and catalog, The Open Book, which cites the finest photographic books from 1878 to the present.Richards's photographs have been exhibited in more than 50 solo shows in the United States and abroad, including the International Center of Photography in New York, VISA pour l'Image in Perpignan, and Les Rencontres d'Arles Photographie.He explores how capitalism and power have shaped countries, and how that can be seen and experienced in everyday life. Graves also works to elevate the representation of people of color in the fine art canon, and to create opportunities for conversation about race, representation, and urban life. He photographs to preserve memory.

Vision(ary) is the Griffin Museum of Photography's annual summer public art exhibition dedicated to the art of visual storytelling. This public art installation features individual exhibitions with distinct photographic styles, including banners hung on light standards and art installations around the Griffin Museum.From the Civil Rights Movement to contemporary struggles for racial equity, gender justice, environmental protection, labor rights, immigration reform, and democratic accountability, protest has shaped the American narrative.Photography has been central to this history--documenting resistance, amplifying voices, and creating images that define collective memory.In the light of America's 250th anniversary, this year's edition, Raising Our Voices, presents photographic projects that focus on advocacy, social justice, and activism within the United States--past or present.Vision(ary) is supported by the Winchester Cultural District, Winchester Cultural Council, John & Mary Murphy Foundation, En Ka Society, Winchester Rotary, Winchester Savings Bank, Griffin Museum Directors Circle, and other cultural and private partners.
