Common Time | Ron Pownall @ Leica Gallery Boston

The Griffin Museum is pleased to partner with Leica Gallery Boston to celebrate New England legend Ron Pownall, the photographer who has spent more than five decades standing at the edge of the stage with rock and roll's greatest names. Part of our Common Time exhibition lecture series, we are thrilled to have Ron discuss his storied career as a visual storyteller.

Join us at Leica Gallery Boston on Wednesday November 18 at 6pm for an up-close look at the photographer who helped define how the sound of a generation looked.

Pownall's career began at the Chicago Tribune, where he arrived just in time to cover the riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention. His first music assignments read like a roll call of an era: Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and The Righteous Brothers. The path was set. A conscientious objector, Pownall came to Boston to complete his alternative service, and he never really left.

An early connection with Aerosmith in 1973 opened the door to work for CBS/Sony Records, Rolling Stone, and Creem, and to assignments directly for Queen, Elton John, Eric Clapton, the J. Geils Band, Boston, The Cars, Meat Loaf, and Susan Tedeschi, among many others. His archive holds more than 600 artists, and his images have graced over 300 LP, CD, book, and magazine covers.

Pownall's fine art prints are represented by galleries across the country, and Getty Images handles his licensing. He serves on the Artist's Advisory Board of the Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame in Boston, and works from his studio in the Brickbottom Artists Building in Somerville, Massachusetts.
